Frequently Asked Questions

New construction drywall in St. Louis (finished to a level 4) ranges between $1.60 per square foot to $2.00+ per square foot depending on the size and complexity of the project and including labor and materials. The total drywall installation cost for any project will depend on the shape and height of the room, the number of rooms, the type and thickness of the drywall, the prep and cleanup necessary, and the level of finish. In 2023, St. Louis homeowners are spending an average of $16,000 dollars for 10,000 square feet of drywall installation, with a range between $16,000 and $20,000+.

We recommend interior drywall installation that is 1/2″ thick. Drywall also comes in 1/4″, 3/8″, and 5/8″ thicknesses. Residentially 1/2″ drywall is used most frequently with 5/8″ drywall being used in garages and under stair stringers. 1/4″ high flexible drywall can be used on barrel vaults and archways. 5/8″ drywall is used as it carries a fire rating and is often required in commercial projects or multifamily projects. 3/8″ drywall is typically used only when trying to blend a patch.

According to the USG there are 6 levels of drywall finish with level 0 being the lowest level of unfinished drywall.

  1. Level 0 Finish is used in temporary construction or wherever the final decoration has not been determined.
  2. Level 1 Finish is used in plenum spaces above ceilings, in attics, and in areas where the assembly would generally be concealed or in building service corridors and other areas not normally open to public view.
  3. Level 2 Finish is used with setting-type compound for areas where water-resistant gypsum backing board, specification ASTM C630, is used as a substrate for tile. It may also be specified for standard gypsum board surfaces in garages, warehouse storage or other similar areas where surface appearance is not of primary importance.
  4. Level 3 Finish is used in areas which are to receive heavy texture (spray or hand applied) finishes before final painting, or where commercial-grade (heavy duty) wallcoverings are to be applied as the final decoration.
  5. Level 4 Finish is used where residential grade (light duty) wall coverings, flat paints or light textures are to be applied. The prepared surface shall be coated with a drywall primer prior to the application of final finishes.
  6. Level 5 Finish is the highest quality finish and the most effective method to provide a uniform surface and minimize the possibility of joint photographing and of fasteners showing through the final decoration. This level of finish is required where gloss, semigloss or enamel are specified. or when flat joints are specified over an untextured surface, or where critical lighting conditions occur.
